WhatsApp message cost calculator — what Meta charges from 1 October 2026

Enter how many customer conversations you handle and how many reminders you send. See what Meta bills once your number passes its 1,000 free replies a month — and what stays free.

On 1 October 2026 WhatsApp’s pricing changes for every business on the platform. Until now, replying to a customer inside the 24-hour service window was free, however many messages went back and forth. From that date Meta counts every reply you send — a text, a list of times, a confirmation — as a service message, gives each business phone number 1,000 of them free per calendar month, and bills the rest per delivered message at the same rate it charges for utility templates in the customer’s country, with no volume discounts. Messages your business starts — appointment reminders, confirmations sent after the chat has gone quiet, offers — were already billed per message and still are. The calculator above puts both on one line.

Two details decide whether this costs you anything at all. First, volume: a booking conversation is typically four to six messages, so 1,000 free replies covers roughly 170 to 250 conversations a month — more than most salons, clinics, tutors and driving schools handle on WhatsApp. Second, the payment method: from the same date, a number with no payment method in Meta’s Billing Hub is not delivered past its 1,000th reply until the count resets, so the AI or the person answering your WhatsApp simply goes quiet. With a card on file the overage is a small bill; without one it is a silent outage. Add the card before you need it.

Three things keep the number low. Send one message per turn — a list of available times in a single interactive message instead of five bubbles. Move the long tail to a web booking page and a website chat widget, where WhatsApp’s meter does not apply. And connect your own number rather than renting one through a platform that resells messages: Meta’s rate is the whole cost, and a tool like Welqo adds no markup on top. The per-country rates are on Meta’s own rate card; this calculator uses whatever rate you type, so check yours and paste it in.

Enter your monthly conversations, replies per conversation, the messages you start and your market’s utility rate on this page to estimate Meta’s bill after the free 1,000 service messages.

Frequently asked questions

What is a service message on WhatsApp?

A message your business sends inside the 24-hour customer service window that opens when a customer messages you: text, images, interactive lists and buttons. Template messages — reminders, confirmations, marketing — are not service messages; they are billed by category from the first one.

How much does a service message cost after 1 October 2026?

The same as a utility template in the customer’s country, with no volume tiers, after the first 1,000 per business phone number per month. In India that is about ₹0.12; in many countries it is a cent or two. Meta’s rate card has the exact figure for each market.

Is the free 1,000 per business or per number?

Per business phone number, per calendar month, counted in the WhatsApp Business Account’s time zone. A business with two numbers gets 1,000 free on each.

What happens if my WhatsApp Business account has no payment method?

The first 1,000 service messages of the month are delivered; from the 1,001st Meta does not deliver until the next month starts. Adding a payment method in Meta’s Billing Hub takes two minutes and is what keeps your replies flowing.

Do messages from customers count?

No. Only messages you send count. Inbound messages have never been charged.

Do reminders count against the free 1,000?

No. Reminders and confirmations are template messages, billed per message from the first one and separate from the 1,000. Note that utility templates sent inside an open customer window were free until 1 October 2026 and are charged from that date.

How does Welqo keep the bill small?

The AI sends one message per turn, so a booking is four to six replies; the web booking page and website widget take the long tail with no Meta meter at all; the connect page shows a live meter of the free 1,000 and emails you at 70% and 100%; and Welqo adds no markup — Meta’s rate is the whole cost. The free plan covers 50 bookings and 100 broadcasts a month; paid plans start at 15 US dollars, flat.
